Casa de la Mujer now offering Mental Health support

July 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Casa de la Mujer is pleased to announce that we will be offering a Psychologist’s services for the women and children of San Juan and surrounding areas. Elmer Collado, who has experience working with cases of domestic abuse, alcoholism and other family problems, will have office hours at Casa de la Mujer (on the street behind the Texaco station) each Wednesday from 9:00 am until noon. Services will start on Wednesday, August 5th and is by donation, (Spanish only at this time.)

Casa de la Mujer offers free English classes, a sewing class, cosmetology class, and folkloric dancing classes for children. Future plans include an embroidery class, self-defense class, and cooking and business classes, depending on getting funding for more teachers ($25 a month per teacher per class). We also now have two soccer teams, one for teenagers and the other for young women. Donations are welcome. Help us sponsor a teacher!

There are many deserving women and children living right here in San Juan del Sur who need your help. Many children are victims of domestic violence or absentee parents. Young children often care for their even younger siblings. If anyone has an idea for a free program (swimming lessons, crafts, sports, cooking, exercise classes, yoga, drama, etc.) to engage the women and/or children of San Juan del Sur, please contact Director Mayra Calderon(Spanish) at 8994-2338 or Bonnie Hayman (English) at 8483-2681.

Casa de la Mujer Soccer Team!

June 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks to a very generous donation from Peace Passers and Bring It Promotions, Casa de la Mujer is now able to sponsor two female soccer teams – one for girls ages 10-12 and the second for older women.  Both organizations contributed t-shirts and soccer cleats to the cause!  The girls were thrilled to receive the donation and are excited to participate in their first game.  The team is still in need of funding in order to provide a salary to coaches, pay referees, and to purchase more equipment and uniforms.  For more information or to make a donation, please contact us using the contact form below.

El Día de los Niños is a celebration of children and families that culminates on April 30th each year.  Many nations throughout the world, and especially within the Western hemisphere celebrate “Día de los Niños” to honor and celebrate children—who represent the hope and dreams of every community.  This year, the Casa de la Mujer celebrated this holiday by inviting children from the community to a special party that included snacks, juice, a piñata, and a small gift.

Last weekend, the A. Jean Brugger Foundation hosted a fundraising event for their organization in the central park of San Juan del Sur.  Committee members were nice enough to allow Casa de la Mujer to have an information table at the event and to sell raffle tickets that remained from the Sunset fundraiser.
